This diagram shows the detail of the
engagement between British Heavy Brigade and Russian cavalry. The squadrons of
the Heavies attacked piecemeal into different parts of the Russian mass. Note
the Lord Scarlett started the battle (center bottom) leading the Greys and
Inniskillings right into the center. The 5th Dragoon Guards followed. Seeing
this the remaining squadroon ofthe Inniskillings charged the Russian left flank
- the Royals arracked the Russian right flank. Then the 4th Dragoon Guards
moved further to their left and wheeled into the Russian right flank. From the
Sapun Gor heights Raglan and his staff watched in amazement as the tall
bearskins of the Greys seemed to float right through the Russian mass. The
Russians were so closely packed their lancers had not chance to lower their
weapons. The engagement was over quickly as the Russian mass fell back over the
ridge. The British did not pursue. Meanwhile this action was observed by the
troopers of the Light Brigade who were impatiently waiting nearby, but whose
commander refused to assist, litterally following his order to 'take ground'.
