ROMAN HISTORY

  {short description of image}
  Diagram of the first phase of the Battle of Cannae from the U.S. Military Academy text - This diagram is different from the current concensus - 1 Cannae ruin was on the same side fo the River as the battlefield - in fact it formed the limit of the left flank of the Roman deployment - 2 - the Roman deployment and hence also the Carthaginian deployment was aligned between the river and the Cannae ridge so that the river was not behind the Carthaginian army but more beside it. 3 - The Lybian heavy infantry was formed in column and not on line behind the Carthaginian cavalry - 4 - the initial deployment of the light infantry on both sides in front of their main line, that is between the two armies shown here, is not shown.
