POMPONS ON GRENADIER CAPS, MUSKETEER AND JÄGER HATS IN 1802-1807

V. KOROLYOV

In 1802 the tops of grenadier caps, and musketeer and jäger hats were decorated with woolen pompons that indicated the regiment and battalion the bearer belonged to. Thus the color of pompon proper marked the number of the battalion: white - the 1st battalion, yellow - the 2nd battalion, red - the 3rd battalion. The central part was the color of the regiment just as jacket shoulder loops were, but there were some exceptions. To prevent confusion a special list was issued. Pompons on caps of NCOs differed from pompons on privates' caps. The former had pompons divided in a cross-like fashion into four parts, two of which were white, and the remaining two - black and orange.

On September 16, 1802, the servicemen of lower ranks in Jäger Regiments were issued new round caps. On August 19 a decree of the Military Board introduced in all the Infantry, Artillery and Jäger Regiments instead of two-cornered hats “caps of black cloth with tops bordered around the crown with black leather, having a peak...a bow of ribbon...and two woolen pompons.” Both pompons were of the same color, with the exception of those on NCOs caps, where the upper pompon was like that of privates, while the lower one was specific for NCOs. The design of the upper pompon was extremely simple. Its frame was made of copper or iron wire of about 2 mm diameter folded by half in order to hide its free ends in the pompon body. On the wire the woolen threads of the middle of the pompon are laid first, then the threads of the periphery. Then in the lower part the pompon threads were corded in three places to make the neck of a pompon. After that the pompon was combed and evenly cut at its top.

The lower pompon, called afterward 'repeyok', had a different design. Its skeleton was a wooden semi-sphere with wire for its fastening. The wooden semi-sphere was covered with woolen tape from the middle along a spiral. The back side of the repeyok was lined with black leather.

It is noteworthy that the orange-and-black sectors of the NCOs' pompons specified with the order were made of black, yellow and red threads, since the sector inlaid with black and orange threads looked gray, while the yellow with red and the black produce in perception the required colors.

It may be also interesting that at the beginning of the 19th century much attention was paid to the problem of the concord of colors, their harmony, which made its impact on the composition of tables and lists of coloring for grenadier caps, pompons, etc. This in particular explains the substitution of colored backs of grenadier

caps for black ones. Whenever the constituent colors produced a bad, from the aesthetic point of view, combination the cap back was changed for a black one.

For instance, the Belozersk Regiment had a red top of the cap, and the back was made black instead of light crimson; the Kiev Grenadier Regiment had a pink top and a black, instead of red, back, etc.

1) Pompon of a grenadier cap of the Keksholm Musketeer Regiment. The white color of pompon indicates the first (grenadier) battalion, and the yellow color of the middle points to the priority of the regiment in inspection.
2) Pompon of a hat of the 3rd battalion of Olonets Musketeer Regiment. The pompon is inserted into a socket at the upper edge of the hat and fastened with a button in the middle of the cockade. The side pompons of the hat are of the same color with the upper pompon, but do not have a colored middle.
3) The pompons of a hat of the 2nd battalion of the Apsheron Musketeer Regiment. 1803. The upper pompon indicates the 2nd battalion of a regiment, and the lower one - the NCO rank of its owner; the privates had the same combiantion of colors in both upper and lower pompons.
4) Pompon of grenadier caps, hats. Its sky blue color indicates a four- battalion garrison regiment, its 2nd battalion.
5) The lower pompon of caps. It was different in its design from the upper pompon due to different positioning on a cap and a different way of fastening. Afterward the lower pompon got the name 'repeyok'. June 6, 1802, No.20,287, nominal, announced by member of the Military Board Prince Dolgorukov.
