MOSCOW - SCENES

  Church of St Nicholas

Church of St Nicholas the Wonder Worker on the Vladimirov Passage in Kitai Gorod. This is the only one of four beautiful churches originally dedicated to the same saint still remaining in Kitai Gorod. It was nicknamed the 'beautiful sound' from the sound of its main bell. Probably this was one of the bells taken from the Poles by Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich during the war for Smolensk and Ukraine. It has an inscription in French. Its historical significance was furthered when a Strel'tsy mutineer called Sokovnin, plotted the assasination of Peter the Great. Sokovnin was beheaded, his body was sent to the morgue, but the head was interned with honors by his relatives in this church.
