Sretinski monastery. On 26 August 1395 the
Muscovite population gathered to greet the arrival of the precious Icon of the
Blessed Mother brought from Vladimir to protect Moscow from the campaign of
Khan Tamerlane. When he turned back before reaching the city, this was
considered a miracle. The monastery was founded in 1397 on the spot where the
icon was met. The same spot became famous again when Ivan IV on his return from
capturing Kazan dismounted his horse and said he would walk the rest of the way
to the Kremlin as a simple soldier. When the rampart of Beli gorod was built it
passed by just outside the monastery walls.. But most of the monastery was
destroyed during Soviet times. Now only the five-domed Vladimir Cathedral
(1679), the church of John the Baptist (1706), and stone two- story monk's
cells remain.
