MOSCOW - SCENES

  Church of St Damian

Tserkov' Kosmi i Damnana v Shubnne, Church of Saints Cosmas and Damian in Shubino, is located on Stoleshnikov lane between Tver and Dmitrov streets next to the square across from the City Hall on which the statue of Yuri Dolgoruki stands. It has an unpretentious appearance from the outside, but the inside is well worth visiting. The stone church was built in 1626 to replace an earlier wooden one. Unfortunately the fine bell tower was leveled to the first floor in 1930. One idea for the name - Shubnne - is that this was the locale of the homes of the shuba makers. Another is that before that here stood the court of the home of the boyar Yakob Shub who led Dmitri Donskoi's troops against Ol'gered's Lithuanians. There are two chapels one named for Cosmas and Damian and one for the Resurection of Christ
