Visokopetrovskii monaster' (The Upper monastery of St Peter the Apostle) on Petrovski Street. According to legends the monastery was founded by Grand Prince Dmitri Donskoi after the victory at Kulikovo in 1380 as a monument to the Icon of the Bogolubskoi Bozh'ei Materi. (Mother of God). In 1514 the main church was rebuilt with the name of St Peter the metropolitan of Moscow and in 1690 the whole monastery was rebuilt and the church was rededicated to St Peter the Apostle. Other accounts credit the construction to Grand Prince Ivan Kalita. Svyatini page 49. Another view is at Moskva Pamyatniki page 170 In this monastery was the eight-sided church built by Alviso Novi in 1514. (Plan drawing) (illustration) and the refectory church and the bell tower The monastery was fortified and served as a strong point in the northern section of the city wall.
