View of Engineer Palace from different angle.
This building was originally named the Mikhailovski Castle. It was designed and
built by Vasilii Bazhenov and Vincenzo Brenna in 1797-1801 for Emperor Paul I.
The emperor was in such fear for his life that he built a fortress surrounded
by a moat. This did him no good, as he was assassinated in his bedroom shortly
after moving into the building. In 1823 the building was taken over by the
Guards Corps Engineers school from which the present name is derived. Now is
contains a branch of the Russia museum. The palace is in the corner between the
Moyka and Fontanka canals where they meet.
