PETERHOF PALACE

The fountains in front of the palace. Here on the right we see the statue of Sampson opening the mouth of a lion. The lion is the heraldric symbol of Sweden and the battle of Poltava was won on St. Sampson's day in 1709. Note also the entrance to the grottos. The lower grotto has some of Peter's trick fountains.
