In front is the belfry built in 1810 to replace the 16th century building destroyed by lightning. In the rear is the Uspensky Cathedral built by Prince Andrei Yuryevich Bogolubski in 1160 as part of his development of his capital. This was the official cathedral of the rulers of Vladimir and burial place of its princes including Andrei and Vsyevolod. The rulers including Alexander Nevski and Dmitri Donskoy were crowned here. This Uspensky Cathedral served as a model for that in the Moscow Kremlin. It was damaged by fire in 1180's after which Andrei's brother, Vsyevolod III Yuryevich restored it and added the gallery and 4 domes. The original building's walls are now inside the visible structure. It was burned by the Mongols in 1238. In the 1400's Andrei Rublyev and Daniel Chormei painted new frescos and iconostasis. The cathedral was again burned by the Tatars in 1411. It was reconstructed in the18th century at which time a baroque iconostasis was added. Major restoration work has been accomplished in recent years.
