Description

  {short description of image}

Approaching Nizhni-Novgorod cruising down the Volga we pass a local sand and agregate plant just across the Oka from the old part of town. The large Savior Old Market Cathedral (Spassky Staroyarmarochny sobor) built in 1822 is visible just behind the cranes. The city on the other side of the Oka is on the hills in background.

Continuing down river and moving into the Oka to dock we see the same Savior Old Market Cathedral across the Oka from Nizhni-Novgorod - in the section where the fair is conducted. The Nizhni fair was famous in the last century as it attracted merchants coming up the Volga from Central Asia and the Far East. - a river ferry boat is in the forground

View of the main part of the kremlin high above the Volga River. Theee fortress was founded in 1221 but the current brick walls date from the 16th century. Thus they appear similar to the walls of the Moscow kremlin, the Novgorod kremlin and Smolensk, to mention only three.
