Charles Cameron

 
 

An Englishman, Charles Cameron, 1740-1812, arrived in Russia in 1779 to contribute his experience and knowledge to the decoration of the royal estates near Saint Petersburg. His first commission was the beautiful park in Pavlovsk, built for the Crown Prince Paul, but more often enjoyed by his wife Marie. He dotted it with lovely temples, charming pavilions and monuments, and then in 1782-1785 added a large castle with cubical forms and a row of Greek columns. In Tsarskoye Selo (Pushkin) Cameron built, adjacent to the south side of the Catherine palace, a lovely covered gallery, about 250 feet long, which permitted promenades during bad weather.
