Nicholas Gillet

 
 

The French sculptor Nicholas Gillet, 1709-1791, brought to Saint Petersburg the grace and the delicacy of the French school of sculpture. He was first a professor at the Academy and later its director, in which capacity he trained and launched the first Russian sculptors, among them the talented Shubin, Kozlovskii, and Shchedrin.
