RUSSIAN ART AND ARCHITECTURE
THROUGH THE CENTURIES

Landscape Painting

In the second half of the 18th century there also appeared the first Russian landscape painters; landscape painting had been the weakest point in Russian art. Paintings of the Russian country-side, towns, squares and palaces had existed before, but were all painted by foreigners, and some of them date from the time of Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich. His son Peter the Great as we have seen had different tastes. When the Academy of Art was founded, landscape painting was taught as a separate subject. For years Italian scenery and the Italian school and style served as models to a generation of Russian landscape painters, to such an extent that some of them made Russian landscapes look Italian.
