F. F. Shchedrin, 1751-1825, also studied
under Gillet and later continued in Paris. Probably because he outlived the
other two sculptors by about twenty years, his art represents more strongly
transitional period between the baroque and the classic styles. Among this most
successful statues is his "Venus," while "Eve" is hardly
out of the ordinary. His "Perseus with the Head of the Gordeon
Medusa" symbolizes Russian victories over the invaders and the punishment
they received. Shchedrin also sculpted the Caryatides supporting the Universe
for the Admiralty building in Saint Petersburg.
