The second half of the 12th century
witnessed constant internecine struggles among Russian princes and a rather
rapid political and cultural eclipse of Kiev. At the same time, there was
recorded a rapid growth of
Vladimir, originally a small village on the river Kliazma which Vladimir
Monomakh turned into a fortified town in the beginning of the 12th century.
Vladimir rapidly became an important trading center and a town of capable
craftsmen. As such it attracted attention of Prince Andrei Bogoliubsky,
1157-1174, son of Yuri Dolgoruky and ruler of Rostov-Suzdal, who moved his
throne to Vladimir.
