Some Soviet historians believe that Peter
also built the church of Annunciation at the Gorodishche in 1103, after Prince
Mstislav I Vladimirovich (son of Vladimir Monomakh) and prince of Kyiv,
commissioned him to do it. The church was similar to the other churches that
Peter had built in Novgorod. There are no clear indications of why the church
had to be rebuilt in the middle of the 14th century. If its frescoes (that also
include Pieta) were painted soon after the church was completed, then they
should be considered as the earliest Novgorod frescoes of the 14th century that
have survived. It appears that it was for this church that Mstislav, whom the
Chronicle represented as a great ruler, ordered the hand written and
illustrated Gospel, the so-called"Msitislavovo Evangelie," which is
one of the oldest known Russian ancient manuscript.
