This map from the West Point Atlas depicts
the situation on 24-25 August. By this time Prince Bagration has escaped from
the encircling movement attempted by Marshal Davout and has joined Barclay de
Tolly at Smolensk where the combined Russian armies fought against Napoleon's
main force on 16-17 August. The map shows the French and Russian main forces
starting to move east on the road from Smolensk toward Moscow. Meanwhile
Tormassov moved north in western Ukraine into Byelorussia and fought several
battles. He pushed Reynier back until Schwarzenberg reenforced him. Then the
Austrians pushed Tormassov back and cfollowed him south-west of the Pripet
Marsh. But Tormassov was wise to preserve his army at this early stage of the
campaign and it played an important role in November under Admiral Chichagov in
November (by which timeTormassov himself had joined Kutuzov. In the north,
Macdonald faces Essen at Riga.
