This map from the West Point Atlas shows the
disposition of forces on 23 November, just before Napoleon reached the
Berezhina. Admiral Chichagov was in position to block the crossing but was
lured south by a clever feint conducted by Oudinot. Then he and Wittgenstein
failed to trap Napoleon at Studenka. The map shows with dotted line Corbineau's
cavalry brigade moving south on the west bank and crossing the Berezhina at
Studenka before continuing east to join Oudinot on the 22nd at Natsha. His
report about this potential crossing was critical for Napoleon. Victor with
12,000 troops is holding Wittgenstein with 30,000 troops north of the road
junction at Bobr. The Guard, Junot and Poniatovski have reached that village,
while Ney, EugeneandDavout are following along the road from Orsha. Kutuzov is
well off the map to the southeast.
