This map from the Beskrovni Atlas shows the
two armies during the first phase of Borodino battle. Barclay de Tolly's army
is on the Russian right and Bagration's army is on the left. Barclay de Tolly
is beginning to shift the 5th (Constantine)and 2nd (Bagavout) Corps south.
Junot's assault has been thrown back. The divisions of Campans and Dessaix
(Davout's I Corps) are pressing the fletches. Ponyatovski ( V Corps) is moving
slowly on the French right flank toward Tuchkov I (III Corps), at Utitsa. On
thee French left Eugene (IV Corps) is attempting to take the bridge at Borodino
village. Note this Russian historians presentation of strength and loss figures
- Russians loss of 43,000 out of 95,000 (plus 7,000 Cossacks and 10,000
militia) and French loss of 58,000 out of 130,000. This is different from some
western estimates.
