1812 CAMPAIGN - BORODINO

  {short description of image}

This map from the Beskrovni Atlas depicts the situation on 18 August on which date the French were attempting unsuccessfully to cut the Russians off east of Smolensk. Marshal Junot, moving south of the Dniper might have done this but failed to press forward. While Prince Bagration hurried directly east, Barclay de Tolly's forces were split and had to struggle northeastward over poor roads.
