He was born in the 1260's as the third son of
Alexandr Nevski. His mother was Aleksandra
Bryachislavna, princess of Polotsk. He married in 1294 with Vasilisa, daughter
of Dmitri Borisovich, appanage prince of Rostov.
His sons were Boris, appanage prince of Kostroma;
and Mikhail, appanage prince of Gorodets. The family
is shown on this chart.
He was given Gorodets as his appanage in 1263 and
then Kostroma in 1293. He was also prince of
Novgorod (1300-1304), and Grand prince of
Vladimir (1281-1283) (1294-1304). After 1281 he
fought his brother, Dmitri Aleksandrovich for the
yarlik as grand prince of Vladimir. With a large Tatar army he finally
was able to defeat Dmitri in 1293.
