He was a son of Mikhail Vasil'yevich Shuiski and grandson of Vasilii
Yur'yevich. He was a field commander in 1533 serving Vasilii III. He fell from
grace during the ascendancey of Elena. Then he was released and made governor
of Pskov in 1539-40. He was noted for his excessive greed. He was appointed by
Ivan IV Vasil'yevich (when Ivan was thought to be
dying) to the position of head of the boyar government in 1542, but Ivan then
suspected him of treason so he was imprisoned, then executed, by Ivan IV in
1543. His son was Ivan. The family is shown on
