He was the only son of Ivan Davidovich, prince of Galich ( in northwest Rus -
not to be confused with Galicia in far west). He was also appanage prince of
Galich. His son was Vasilii, prince of Galich without udel. The family is shown
on this chart.
Around 1363 Grand Prince Dmitri Donskoi took the
udel from Dmitri Ivanovich and in practice united it with Moscow territory. In
his will in 1389 he recreated a udel with the volosts and gave it together with
Zvenigorod and Ruza to his son, Yuri Dmitriyevich. In 1450 during the prolonged
wars with Dmitrii Shemiyaka who fled to Novgorod, Vasilii II finally ended the independence of Galich and
united its lands with Moscow. Later Galich was given for 'kormelenie"
(that is feeding) to officials but never with independent governing powers.
