He was the son of Yuri Mikhailovich, appanage prince of Taruss. He was prince of Volkonsk. His son was Yuri, prince Volkonski. They are shown in this family chart.
The capital of the Volknonski udel was the small fortress town Volkon on the Volkona river in the Aleksinski uezd of Kaluga region. After the death in 1246 of Prince Yuri Mikhilovich, appanage prince of Tarussk, his son, Ivan, moved to the Volkon river where he received a votchina, which when separated from the Tarussk appanage began to be known as the Volkonski udel. The udel princes Volkonski were eliminated at the end of the15th century since at the beginning of the16th century the Princes Volkonski did not have rights as political rulers but had landowners rights to their votchinas.
