He was the son of Konstantin Vasil'yevich, grand prince of Rostov and Maria Ivanovna, daughter of Ivan I of Moscow. He was appanage prince of Rostov. His sons were Konstantin and Ivan, princes of Rostov. The family is shown on this chart.
