Dome of St. Isaac's Cathedral - St Isaac of Dalmatia, a Byzantine monk whose feast day happened to be on Peter the Great's birthday. It was designed and built by Auguste de Monteferand for Alexander I. It took from 1818 to 1842 to complete the construction and then until 1852 to finish the interior decoration. The main dome was covered with 220 pounds of gold. |
