The US. Army Women'a Museum is now located at Ft. Lee, Virginia. It was opened there in May 2001.
The Army officially recognized women as a unique part of the Army in 1943 with creation of the Women's Army Corps, known as "WACs". In 1948 one of the WAC Training Centers was opened at Ft. Lee. This center moved to Ft. McClellan Alabama in 1954. During the following years many friends and veterans collected money to create a special Woman's Army Corps Museum, which opened in 1978. That same year Congress abolished the separate WAC designation and integrated women into the other branches. The museum continued to develop at Ft. McClellan until 1999 when the entire post was deactivated. Congress agreed to relocate the museum and Ft. Lee was chosen as the most appropriate location. Here are a few of the exhibits.
