A more detailed view of the far western portion of the Takla Makan and surrounding mountains with Stein's routes in this area. Kashgar is in the far west just above the green area and in the foothills of the mountains. The red line of Stein's route leads south-east to Yarkand. The there are two routes to Khotan - one long the desert and one through the mountains. From Khotan the route is in the cultivated green strip to Keriya. The red line between Khotan and Aksu traces Stein't route north along the Khotan River past Mazar-taghl while the red line along the Keriya River traces his route south across the desert. The ruins of Niya and Endere are in the desert near the east side. Stein's many routes through the high mountains between Khotan - Keriya and the Karakorum Pass are shown, but more clearly in other detailed map sections.
