Here is a British map from Kinglake's history
of the war. Note that the British call Bastion 1=Battery of the point; Bastion
2=The Little Redan; Bastion 3=The Redan; and Bastion 4=The Flagstaff Bastion -
The Flagstaff Bastion is the location now of the Panorama Museum. The stone
fort tower on the Malakov Kurgan is the Kornilov tower. Note how the deep inlet
comes between the Redan and Flagstaff bastions. Itr was covered by a very thin
Russian defensive work, but an assault there would have come under devastating
cross fire from the ridges in either side. The entire Vorontsov Road was
covered by Russian fire.
