TRINITY ST SERGIUS MONASTERY

The belfry built at the expense of Empresses Anna, Elizabeth and Catherine II. It is 5 tiers and 322 feet high. At one time it had 40 bells. It was begun in 1741 and completed in 1769, after several redesigns added 2 tiers. The gold dome to the right rear is the Trinity Cathedral 1422-3 over the tomb of St Sergius. Behind the belfy is the refectory. In front of the belfry is the small gold dome on top of the Smolenski Church built in 1746-48
