MOSCOW CHURCHES
We are attempting to
catalog the churches in Moscow, including those destroyed since 1918. The chief
reference is the 4-volume work Sorok Sorokov published in Moscow in
1997. We will follow its organization that divides the churches according to
location - Kremlin, Kitai Gorod - Beli Gorod - Zemli gorod - and outer suburbs.
Also, the former monasteries are listed together. We will link this listing to
files for the churches, especially those for which we have photographs. The
authors of Sorok Sorokov compiled the data about churches existing in 1917
versus their status in 1990. We show that in this table.
Kremlin
In 1917 there were
two monasteries and including them there were 31 churches with 5 chapels and 51
altars. Worship was abruptly stopped in all of them in 1918. Seventeen churches
with 25 altars were destroyed including both monasteries. We show these with a
D. These included the most ancient buildings in
Moscow - The Birth of John the Precursor in the woods with its cathedral Spasa
Preobrazheniya na Boro dating from 14th century.. Thirteen churches with 22
altars were closed. The last time religious services were held in the Kremlin
was for Easter in 1918 in the Uspenski cathedral. The first time services were
resumed was on 13 October 1989, again in the Uspenski cathedral
