GUDONOV MAP OF MOSCOW

  map of Moscow

Map of Moscow in 1590's. Note that the kremlin is a triangle with the Neglinniya river on the left side and a moat filled with water from the river on the right side where Red Square is. Then next to it is Kitai Gorod also with a wall and another moat and then there is the semicircular half donut shaped Belii gorod or white city named for the white wall outside it. Note the wide space outside the Kremlin and Kitai Gorod walls for defensive protection. The wide boulevard and parks that run from the circle in front of the Lubyanka past the Kremlin to the Kammeny most occupy this space today. Then there is the Zemli gorod or Earth city outside that. These walls are now the location of the inner and middle ring roads
