Fragment remaining of the wall of Kitai
Gorod, now just behind the Rossia hotel parking lot. Originally Kitai gorod was
completely surrounded by a wall with four gate towers, Sretinski (or Nikol'ski,
Troitski or Iliinski, Vsesvyatski or Varvarski, and Kos'mo-damianski. Then over
the years more gates were added; Vladimirski, directly with the Nikol'ski
openedon Lubyanski square, Novonikol'ski , located between the old Nikol'ski
and Il'inski bates, and Moskvoretski, opening directly on the bridge over the
Moskva river. Then the wall along the river was torn down and a wide street
created along the river bank.
