MOSCOW - SCENES

  plaque

Plaque on wall at Pushkarski street. It indicates that this area was called Pushkarski because it was the suburb in which the streltsi and pushkari lived (that is the special infantry and artillerymen) but was renamed during Soviet times and has now, in 1994, been returned to the original name. This is typical of many streets and regions in Moscow. In fact one now needs a glossary to relate the Soviet and historical (and now returned) names.

Return to Xenophon. Return to Ruscity. Return to Rushistory. Return to Ukraine.
