ROSTOV VELIKI

The real fortification of Rostov was designed by Dutch engineers brought in by newly elected Tsar Mikhail Romanov. The city had suffered at the hands of the Poles during the time of troubles and since it was a favorite of Mikhail's he wanted it to have the latest in modern bastion trace fortifications. Long sections of the parapet and ditch and the bastions are visible on several sides of the town.
