ST PETERSBURG

  {short description of image}

In this plan of St Petersburg as of 1737 we see the main part of the downtown area is taking shape surrounded by marshes. The main canals are in place. The admiralty shipyard is surrounded by a moat. The Peter and Paul fortress has its outer defenses where the Artillery Museum is located now. The Alexander Nevski Lavra (monastery) is still well outside the city, at the end of the road next to the Neva River.
