Throughout the 18th century and the beginning of the 19th most Russian artists painted portraits, in which they had some experience and knowledge and in which some of them even excelled. Large canvases with historic-mythological and allegorical subjects were either imported or painted by foreigners who, usually for considerable amounts of money, fulfilled the order of their rich but still artistically uneducated clientele. |
