Until the middle of the 14th century Pskov
was closely associated with Novgorod, and often politically and economically
dominated by it. The archbishop of Novgorod was also head of Pskov, and
nominated the local bishop. Under such circumstances the art in Pskov was also
under strong influence by Novgorod, and to distinguish one from the other is
sometimes difficult, even with thorough acquaintance. Generally speaking, the
colors of Pskov icon painters are darker and more dense, occasionally relieved
with gold strokes; browns and dark greens dominate their palette. The
composition is rather sober and simplified, but usually well-balanced, and the
figures often elongated. Yet all these characteristics are not necessarily only
Pskovian.
