Silvester F. Shchedrin, 1791-1830, is often
mentioned as one of the best Russian landscape painters, though he never
painted Russian scenes or countryside. Like many other Russian artists,
Shchedrin too was lured by the glitter and brightness of the Italian sun, but
the difference is that he lived there all his life, he died and was buried
there, and in a way he could be considered an Italian painter, too. Most of
Shchedrin's paintings show Sorrento, where he lived or Napoli and its
surroundings. They are full of its blue skies, bright sunshine, southern
vegetation and the Mediterranean Sea and people. He tried to depict the
enormous amount of light that abounds as if it will never stop shining. For
this some art historians are ready to consider Shchedrin the precursor of the
impressionists. However, the difference in style between them still remains and
Shchedrin was a classical landscape painter more than anything else. Here we
have the artist's conception of the Italian coast at Sorento near Naples.
