He was a son of Vladimir Andryeyevich Khrabrii, appanage prince of Serpukhov and Yelyena Ol'grdovna, Lithuanian princess. He became appanage prince of Radonezh about 1410. He married a daughter of the boyar, Ivan Dmitriyevich Vsyevolozhski. They had a daughter who married Vasilii Yur'yevich Kosoi, the chief opponent of grand prince Vasilii II.
