In the chart each nation or group such as
cossacks or Tatar hordes is color coded. They are cross referenced - that is on
the cossack line they will be shown fighting Poland and on the Poland line they
will be shown fighting cossacks. Each group is shown down the side and each
year appears across the top. By comparing colors one can easily determine who
was fighting whom each year. The point of these graphs is to emphasize that in
many years the conflicts were multi-sided and conducted in multiple theaters of
war. note especially from 1550 to 1580 - the reign of Ivan IV how many theaters
of war in which he conducted war. But note that his enemies were fighting each
other as well.
