Jones, Dan - The Plantagenets - review by John Sloan
A fine narration with analysis of the role of this family dynasty in the making
of England. Full of examples of 'contingency' in historical changes and also
role of so called 'great men' in history

|
|
Cannae, The Ghosts of
Cannae by Robert L. O'Connell - review by John Sloan
I much critize this book - it is really not so much about the battle itself,
for which the analysis is faullty, but on the 'ghostes' that is the survivors
and their psychology resulting from their treatment by the Roman Senate.

|
|
Lawrence, Christopher,
Kursk
A massive - and I mean massive - study of this famous battle - with archival
material from both sides. Many misunderstandings and 'myths' are corrected.
This is limited to the southern flank of the larger battle but does include
full detail of the air war part not found in other accounts. Much analysis on
the basis of daily situation reports on strengths and losses to both sides. It
is a model for excellent historiographical research and writing.
