RUSSIAN ART AND ARCHITECTURE
THROUGH THE CENTURIES

Semeyon F. Shchedrin

S. F. Shchedrin, 1745-1804, is considered to be the first Russian landscape painter. He studied at the Academy where he came under the strong influence of two Italian teachers; Valeriani and Peresinotti. His canvases show rather idealized scenes around Saint Petersburg, where royalty and the nobility lived. Even the trees look majestic, and by using delicate colors he rendered nature more beautiful than it actually was. Here is the artist's view of the landscape near Petersburg.
