This map from the Beskrovni Atlas depicts on
the left side the general situation around the Berezhina river crossing and on
the right side details of the engagement at the crossing at Studenka itself. On
the left map we see that Chichagov on 26 November has broght 30,000 troops to
hold the crossing at Borisov, but is temporarily lured south along the river
before realizing his mistake and rushing back north toward Zembin on the 28th.
Wittgenshtein and Shteingell are moving south from Polotsk and Disna
respectively but too slowly being opposed by Wrede and Oudinot. Victor joins
Oudinot at Chashniki on 31 October. On the 25th Wittgenstein is already close
to Studenka and unopposed, but is still moving too cautiously. Milorodovich and
Platov are pressing right behind Napoleon while Kutuzov is moving along a
parallel route to the south.
In the map on the right we see the engagement at Studenka on the 26-28th Ney
holds Chichagov off on the west bank whileVictor extracts as much of the rear
guard as he can ahead of Wittgenstein on the east bank. The Russians have
neglected to destroy the bridges and causways through the swamp when they had
the chance earlier on thus enabling Napoleon to escape to the northwest at
Zemblin.
