1812 CAMPAIGN - BORODINO

  {short description of image}

This map from the Beskrovni Atlas depicts the battle for the Shevardino Redoubt on the evening of 5 September. This redoubt was placed well forward of the Russian main line for the purpose of forcing the French to deploy early and thus delay their advance. But in the heat of defending it the Russians overcommitted their forces to defend a position that should have been held only temporarily. The left section shows the initial deployments at 1900 hrs. Moran and Compans are moving south while Ponyatovski is moving east and northeast against a screen of Russian jagers. In the right hand section The Russians are throwing more troops into the battle. Compans has pushed over the redoubt and Moran is pressing the Russian right flank. Ponyatovski is moving his Polish corps toward Utitsa.
