He was a son of Dmitrii Yur'yevich Shemyaka, appanage prince of Galich
and Sof'ia Dmitriyevna, princess of Zaozersk. He was a prince of Galich without
udel. Their son was Vasilii Shemyachich, prince of
Novgorod-Seversk and they had a daughter. The family is shown on this chart. With the death of his father, Dmitrii, while
already in exile in Novgorod, Ivan had no possibility of regaining anything in
Muscovy. He was given the rights to rule at Novgorod-Severia by King Casimir IV
of Poland. Thus the family seat was shifted from the far north east to the far
southwest of the ancient Rus lands.
