Belev was near Tula on the Oka river. The first mention of the place is in the
chronicle for 1147 when the town entered into the Chernigiv principality. In
the middle 14th cent Belyev with its surrounding lands left Chernigiv and
became part of the Odoyev udel. In 1407 Odoyev and Belyev weretaken by Vitov
and became part of Lithuania. In 1468 the Lithuanian-Polish government divided
the Belyev lands from the Odoyev land and gave it to Vasilii Romanovich
Odoyevski. In 1493, during the rule of his son, Mikhail, the territory went
from Lithuania to Muscovy.
