YURI MIKHAILOVICH (13th cent)

He was the fourth son of Mikhail Vsyevolodovich, appanage prince of Chernigiv. He became appanage prince of Taruss. His sons were Vsyevolod, appanage prince of Taruss; Konstantin, appanage prince of Obolensk; and Ivan appanage prince of Volkonsk. They are shown in this family chart.
The capital of the Tarusski udel was the town, Tarusa. The date on which this udel was created is not clear. The town itself was first mentioned in the chronicles in 1215, when it came into the organization of the Chernigov-seversk lands. In 1246 after Mikhail Vsyevolodovich died at the Horde, Tarusa was divided from the Chernigiv principality, and made into an independent udel. It was given to Yurii Mikhailovich. In the 14th century the Tarusski udel began to be divided into a series of smaller polities. But the Taruss princes governed their votchina up to 1392 when it was united into the Moscow principality by Vasilii I Dmitriyevich. In the middle 16th century the Moscow prince gave the Taruss land to Bogdan to govern but then reunited it with Moscow. The udels carved from Taruss are mentioned in the sections on their princes, Obolenski, Meshevski, Baryatinski, Trostyenski and Volkonski.
